The Northern Kentucky Urban & Community Forestry Council is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

NKUCFC is an interdisciplinary group of citizens and professionals who support the work of existing organizations and agencies interested in urban forestry.

We provide a forum of learning by researching and sharing technical information on the value of urban forestry. At NKUCFC, we help communities improve the management of their trees and green spaces to protect and enhance them for our future generations. With our annual events, we offer opportunities for others to join us in these efforts!

We are the art, science, and technology of managing trees, forests, and natural systems in and around urban areas for the health and well being of our communities.

Our Vision

To foster healthy, beautiful NKY communities through responsible environmental stewardship.

Our Mission

Create awareness in our communities about the value of urban forestry as an integral part of comprehensive planning and action for the purpose of improving our quality of life and shared landscape.

Our challenge

Our challenge is to merge the manmade and natural environments so both are accommodated and valued in the process. Therefore, we:

  • Serve as a forum for the exchange of information - a resource clearinghouse;
  • Serve as a catalyst in the development and promotion of urban forestry concepts, practices, techniques, education, and public policy;
  • Facilitate the involvement of youth in urban forestry projects and education to develop tomorrow's leaders;
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among all segments of our communities, including businesses, builders, developers, utilities, citizens, environmental organizations, and government agencies;
  • And lead and advocate in our community for responsible land development and management for the protection, maintenance, and renewal of our urban and community forests.

Our Strategic Plan

In 2016, NKUCFC began the review and implementation of our strategic plan. This will be our guide into the future of our organization. See something you're interested in? Contact us to get involved!

Strategic Plan

What is urban forestry?

It is a combination of individual trees, parks, green spaces, street trees, and small remnants of woods and forests in an urban area. The urban forest is strongly connected to local waterways, wildlife, and people, as it is vital to our ecosystems. They provide a range of interrelated environmental and socioeconomic benefits, such as:

  • Increased property value
  • Decreased energy consumption
  • Improved air quality
  • Reduced stormwater runoff
  • Decreased soil erosion
  • Improved water quality
  • Buffered zones
  • Reduced noise levels
  • Positive impacts on consumer behavior
  • Increased recreational opportunities
  • Improvements in health, safety, and well being of residents
  • Added visual continuity, identity, landmarks, and pride to communities
  • Beautification and enhanced unique environments and visual landscapes
  • Increase wildlife habitat
  • AND MORE!
